Summary : This hymn is a chant of reverence offered at Vettikottu Shrinagaraja Temple, widely revered as the Adimoolam (the primordial source) of serpent worship in Kerala. It honors the supreme serpent kings and the entire divine ophidian lineage.
(Pallavi & Anupallavi): The song opens with an auspicious salutation to the serpent deities dwelling eternally at the ancient seat of Vettikottu. The devotee bows down before Lord Anantha (Aadishesa), describing him beautifully as the majestic, thousand-hooded serpent king who joyfully serves as the cosmic bed for Lord Vishnu (Adilakshmi Nathan).
(Charanam 1): The verse transitions to worshiping the other primary serpent deity, Lord Vasuki. He is hailed as the king of serpents who rests gracefully on the matted hair of Lord Shiva (Parameshvara). The hymn recalls the grand Puranic legend of the churning of the Milk Ocean (Ksheerabdi) to save the cosmos, where Vasuki selflessly served as the churning rope wrapped around Mount Mandara (Mandarendran).
(Charanam 2): The final verse bows down to the sanctified temple ground itself, invoking the prominent elite clans of the serpent hierarchy—including Padman, Karkotakan, Shankhapalan, Mahapadman, Takshakan, and Gulikan (alongside Anantha and Vasuki, making up the traditional Ashta Nagas). The poet vividly envisions this entire divine serpent lineage raising their majestic hoods high into the air, performing a cosmic, protective dance across the sacred temple premises. The devotee offers their ultimate, humble prostrations (namaskriti) to this spiritually charged land.
Line-by-line meaning of the song will be added in due course.
