Meaning
|
Summary : This moving prayer captures the essence of Nishkama Bhakti (selfless devotion), shifting the focus from external temple rituals to a deeply personal, internal experience of the divine. The singer beautifully expresses that while Lord Krishna’s divine plays, dances, and tinkling ornaments may exist out in the physical world—in temples or ancient legends—their true resonance and rhythm are felt deep within the devotee's own soul. In times of profound sorrow and when the turbulent storms of worldly life rage, the prayer becomes a tender, heartfelt plea for Kannan to melt away the pain with his butter-like mercy, extend his comforting hand of refuge, and open his compassionate eyes to hear his seeker's song.
Pallavi : The devotee sings of an internal, spiritual connection with Krishna: "Even though the beautiful ornaments and little bells (aramani kingini) are tied around your physical waist, isn't the sweet, joyful chiming of those bells echoing deep within my own soul?"
Anupallavi : The singer looks for comfort in times of deep distress: "Into this heart of mine, which is sinking into the profound depths of endless, boundless sorrow, won't you pour your boundless mercy and melt away my pain, just like soft, melting butter? O Krishna!"
Charanam 1 : This verse compares outward temple rituals with inner devotion: "Even if the sacred Krishnanaattam dance performance takes place outside within the temple walls, isn't my beloved Kannan actually dancing inside my very heart? When my eyes are clouded over by the dark clouds of intense grief, won't you appear like a joyful peacock, wearing your sacred peacock feather, and dance before me to lift my spirits?"
Charanam 2 : "Even if Kannan is running around playing in distant Ambadi (Gokulam), isn't the rhythmic sound of his tiny, tinkling anklets echoing right inside my soul? When the immeasurable, turbulent ocean of worldly life roars around me wildly, won't you extend your sacred, divine hand to grant me eternal refuge?"
Charanam 3 : "Even if you rule in all your majesty as the King and Lord of Mathura, you are still my same sweet, mischievous Kannan who plays magical illusions on me. O Madhava, when you hear this sweet, yearning song of mine, won't you softly open your compassionate eyes and look upon me?"
