Meaning
|
Summary : This is a ritualistic devotional song dedicated to the Serpent Gods (Nagas) and the King of Serpents (Nagaraja), heavily rooted in the Sarpam Thullal and Ayilyam Pooja traditions of Kerala's sacred groves (Sarpa Kaavu).
Shlokam :This traditional Sanskrit verse invokes the names of the powerful divine serpents: Anantha, Vasuki, Sesha, Padmanabha, Kambala, Dhritarashtra, Shankhapala, Takshaka, and Kaliya.
Pallavi : The singer bows down to the King of Serpents (Nagaraja) who resides in the Ashtanagakkalam (the sacred, colorful floor drawing of the eight divine serpents). They pray to Him to remove all the miseries, hardships, and struggles from their life.
Anupallavi : The singer refers to the ritual where a traditional stone shrine (Chitrakoodam) is set up and bathed in holy turmeric powder (manjalaadu). They pray: "As you accept this turmeric bath, please come and dance joyfully within the lotus of my mind (chitthapadma)."
Charanam 1: This stanza praises Kadru, the mythological mother of all serpents (Naagamatha), and references the auspicious star of Kanni Aayilyam (a highly sacred day for serpent worship). It acknowledges the glorious divine snakes with thousands of hoods (sahasra phana). The singer asks, "How can I possibly find the words to sing the true glory of the lineage of Lord Vasuki, who protects the very foundations and floors of this earth?"
Charanam 2 : This deeply emotional verse talks about the Kaavu (the sacred grove). The devotee says they have washed the grove with their own tears as holy water (punyaaham) and turned all their pain and illnesses into bright, glowing ghee lamps (neyy vilakku). They pray, "During days of endless sorrow, when the Paala (milkwood) tree blooms, please come, stand by us, protect us, and show mercy. We are waiting for you in the grove with Noorum Paalum (the traditional offering of rice powder, turmeric, and milk)."
Charanam 3 :T he singer recalls the great roles these serpents play: Aadiseshan, who acts as the bed for Lord Vishnu; Kaliya, who was tamed by Krishna; and Vasuki, who adorns the neck of Lord Shiva (Shambhu). The devotee prays that all these divine, mysterious powers—both known and unknown—manifest clearly within their true, sincere heart. They ask the deity to bloom in their inner soul just like a beautiful, pure areca nut flower cluster (kavungin poonkula—a key element used in serpent rituals).
