Meaning

Summary : This Sopanam hymn praises Lord Narasimha, the powerful half-man, half-lion incarnation residing at the Neelukulangara temple. It meditates on His fierce, multi-eyed form wielding divine weapons to destroy all absolute fears and worldly afflictions. The singer vows to chant His sacred names, seeking refuge and protection for ordinary human beings on earth. It vividly recalls the Lord swiftly saving the young devotee Prahlada by ripping open the cruel demon Hiranyakashipu's chest at twilight. Finally, the hymn offers deep reverence to His majestic form, beautifully adorned with a lofty crown, jewels, and divine ornaments.
Slokam (Narasimha Dhyanam) : I praise and meditate upon Lord Narasimha, whose tongue moves restlessly with intense fury, and whose mouth is wide open. His three eyes are the Moon, the Sun, and the Fire (Soma, Surya, Agni). The surrounding atmosphere is illuminated with a dark red glow from the blood splattered by the heavy stamping of His feet as He stands over and tears apart the body of the demon king (Hiranyakashipu). In His upraised hands, He wields terrifying weapons including the discus (Chakra), conch (Shankha), noose (Pasha), goad (Ankusha), thunderbolt (Kulisha), and mace (Gada). I bow to this fierce form with razor-sharp fangs, adorned in magnificent, gem-studded ornaments.
Pallavi : O Lord Narasimha, who resides as the divine incarnation at the Neelukulangara temple, You are the destroyer of terrible fears and absolute dangers. Protect me, protect me (Pahimam).
Anupallavi : To heal the sickness, afflictions, and worldly miseries (Aamayam) of ordinary human beings living on this earth, O Lord, I shall forever chant and sing your sacred names.
Charanam 1 : In order to protect and save the young Prahlada without a moment's delay (Parathe), You used your fierce, razor-sharp fingernails (Kararuhangal) during the twilight hour (Thrisandhya) to rip open the chest (Urassu) of the cruel demon Hiranyakashipu. Salutations to You, Lord Narahari, who is instantly pleased (Kshipraprasadhi) by true devotion.
Charanam 2 : Wearing a lofty, majestic crown (Thungam) on Your head, exquisite necklaces around Your neck, beautiful bangles (Kanganam) on Your wrists, and anklets on Your feet; holding the holy conch, discus, mace, and lotus in Your hands—I bow down and worship the lotus feet of Your divine half-man, half-lion form.
