Summary : This devotional hymn commemorates the rare, sacred festival ritual of Koodiezhunnallathu (the divine meeting) between Lord Shiva (Rudra / Maheshwara / Neelakantha) of the ancient Kannamangalam (Kanvamangalam) Thekku Sree Mahadeva Temple and His divine daughter, Goddess Bhadrakali (Chettikulangara Ambika) of the renowned Chettikulangara Sree Bhagavathy Temple, celebrated annually during Maha Shivaratri in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. Describing the holy vigil of Shivaratri, the hymn praises Lord Shiva's iconic acts of consuming the Kalakuta poison, slaying Kala, and conquering Kamadeva, while extolling Goddess Parvati's protective fasting. It captures the ceremonial arrival of Chettikulangara Bhagavathy at Her father's temple, where She circumambulates the shrine amidst traditional percussion and glowing lamps, visits the homes of devotees to receive offerings, and shares a poignant, affectionate farewell with Her father before granting liberation and peace to all worshipping devotees.
Charanam-1 : O God of gods, supreme Maheshwara, bestower of all auspiciousness, I offer my humble salutations to You; to cross the treacherous ocean of hell and worldly torment, singing the praise of Lord Shankara is my sole refuge.
Charanam-2 : The sacred month of Kumbham has arrived along with the auspicious night of fasting dedicated to Shiva-Shambhu (Maha Shivaratri); all the devotees of Kanvamangalam (Kannamangalam) enter Your holy sanctum.
Charanam-3 : Beholding the Lord mounted on His vehicle Nandi is exquisitely beautiful and dispenses all blessings; all the hosts of celestial devas and venerable sages prepare themselves in devotion to serve Lord Shiva.
Charanam-4 : We join our palms in adoration before the sacred idol adorned with garlands of holy bael (Vilva/Koovalam) leaves and glowing brilliantly with numerous strung garlands.
Charanam-5 : O supreme Lord who bore the terrible burden of the deadly poison Kalakuta, O Shankara and protector of the earth who consumed it without the slightest hesitation!
Charanam-6 : O Lord adorned with serpents who placed the serpent venom upon His tongue, protect me; O Mother Parvati (Shailanandini), daughter of the mountains, who kept vigil and fasted for the blue-throated Lord, protect and shield me!
Charanam-7 : O prime cause of the vanquishing of Yama (Kala), remove all malefic planetary afflictions and the ill effects of time; O Shankara who reduced Kamadeva (the foe of Shambara) to ashes with His third eye, we fold our hands before You in reverence.
Charanam-8 : I bow before the divine daughter of Shiva, Mother Ambika of Chettikulangara, the vanquisher of all evil forces, who arrives in a resplendent ceremonial procession.
Charanam-9 : Rushing with filial affection to the presence of Her father, Lord Rudra, this divine reunion of the daughter with Her father dispels all fear of sin and bestows supreme liberation (moksha).
Charanam-10 : Beholding the ceremonial burning lamps (Polavilakku) and showering Her grace as She performs Her rhythmic divine dance, we fold our hands in prayer before Mother Ambika today so that all our tribulations may be eradicated.
Charanam-11 : Gracefully drawing near and touching Her father whom everyone in the world exalts, accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles (melam) and rows of ceremonial oil lamps (thalappoli), She performs three circumambulations (pradakshinam).
Charanam-12 : Bestowing a heavenly nectar to the eyes of all devotees witnessing the holy night ritual of Sreebali and removing their boundless sea of sorrows, shower Your eternal compassion upon us.
Charanam-13 : The vision of Her holy presence bestows the bliss of liberation as She visits the homes of Her beloved devotees; we welcome You with reverence, arranging decorated festival canopies, ceremonial paddy offerings (anpoli), and traditional floor oil lamps (nilavilakku).
Charanam-14 : How enchanting and exquisite is that rare and tender moment when the father bids a loving farewell to His daughter, who took brisk, graceful rhythmic steps with lively maternal tenderness!
Charanam-15 : Pleased with the devotional observances and fasts of the devotees, protect us and grant us supreme liberation; glory to You, O Kalabhairava and Shankara; salutations unto the blue-throated Lord Neelakantha, salutations unto Neelakantha, salutations unto Neelakantha, O Shankara, Shambho, Shambho, Shambho!
