Meaning
|
Summary : This deeply emotional prayer is dedicated to the presiding deity of the Ernakulam Shiva Temple (Ernakulamathappan).
Shlokam: The song opens with a traditional Sanskrit verse praising Lord Shiva as the master of all elements and beings (Bhoothaadhipam). He is adorned with serpents (Bhujaga), wrapped in a tiger skin skin, and bears matted locks (Jatilam) alongside a powerful third eye (Trinetram). Holding a noose, a goad, a trident (Shoolapaanim), and showing the mudras of fearlessness and blessings, He is meditated upon as Vishwanath, the ultimate protector.
Pallavi: The devotee makes a heartfelt, intimate offering to the Lord of Ernakulam (Eranaakulathappa), the Supreme Almighty (Paramesha). They say, "I shall string a humble garland made of crown flowers (Erikkin Poo—Shiva's favorite rustic flower) to adorn Your sacred form."
Anupallavi: The singer prays that the Lord's brilliant, fiery third eye (Eriyum Kanalaay Mizhiyaal) does not burn, but rather sheds a protective, guiding light down upon the dark, uncertain paths (Irulaam Vazhiyil) of this material world.
Charanam 1: The devotee cries out in deep distress, begging the Lord to hold back His fierce anger (Aruthe Kopam), as this world has become too heavy and impossible to endure. Admitting that their heart is spinning with grief and anxieties (Vyadhayaal), they plead with the Lord to stop subjecting them to agonizing trials by fire (Agni Pareekshanam).
Charanam 2: The song concludes with a beautifully tender image of surrender. The devotee describes mixing the sacred temple ash (Venneer) with their own streaming tears of grief at the steps of the sanctum sanctorum. They pray that when they apply this holy ash to their forehead, the Lord may grant their exhausted soul (Paravasha Adiyanu) the ultimate gifts of true knowledge (Arivu) and righteous virtues (Gunam).
