Meaning
|
Summary : This is a traditional prayer dedicated to Lord Muruga (Kartikeya / Subramanya), heavily drawing from the traditions of his worship as the young ascetic deity of Pazhani (Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple).
Shlokam : "I take refuge in the divine Lord Muruga—the one with six faces (Shadaananam), whose body is smeared with auspicious sandalwood paste, who has a magnificent chest, and who rides a sacred peacock. He is the son of Lord Shiva (Rudra) and the ruler of the heavenly world."
Pallavi : The singer calls out to Muruga, praising his beautiful face, which glows like a blue lotus flower (Indeevara). He is addressed as the beloved son (nandana) of Lord Shiva, who wears the crescent moon (Indukala).
Anupallavi : The devotee bows down to the Lord, praying: "I bow before you today so that your tender, reddish feet (soft like red sprouts) may constantly remain in my thoughts and meditation."
Charanam 1 : The devotee asks the Lord why they are experiencing so much sorrow in life, wondering what past mistakes or sins (aparaadhangal) they might have committed. They cry out to Muruga: "You are the son of the enemy of Death (Shiva). You are my only true relative and my final refuge who can grant me salvation (salgathi)."
Charanam 2 : The devotee looks upon the beautiful six faces (Aananamaarum) of Muruga and bows to him in his form as Dandayudhapani (the one who holds the sacred staff). They salute the Lord whose glory is sung and praised by everyone alike—the gods (Vaanavar), the demons (Daanavar), and human beings (Maanavar).
Charanam 3 : Addressing the Lord who resides in the holy hill town of Pazhani, the singer humbles themselves as a mere atom (anu) before his greatness. They pray: "Please accept and wear this garland of songs that I have woven together as a musical offering, so that I may ultimately reach and merge with your divine feet."
