Summary : This hymn is deep, soulful adoration of Lord Shiva. It extols His ultimate cosmic acts of destruction and benevolence: drinking the devastating Kalakuta poison to protect creation, conquering Death itself (Kalantaka), and reducing the god of desire to ashes.
The prayer specifically addresses Shiva as He resides at the famous Pazhoor Perumthrikkovil Temple in Kerala. He is hailed as the ultimate refuge for mortals, protecting them from worldly decay, and is beautifully described as the living fruit of Goddess Parvati's immense devotion and spiritual merit.
(Kalakantha kapāla bhāsura)
O blue-throated One (Śiva), radiant and adorned with the skull (kapāla)
(Kālakūta visham bhānēśvara)
O Supreme Lord, who consumed the deadly Kalakuta poison (which emerged during the churning of the ocean and was swallowed by Shiva to save the universe.)
(Kāla-bhañjana kāma-śāsana)
O Destroyer of Death (Kāla) and Subduer of Kāma (Cupid)
(Kānta chandra-śikhāmanē jaya)
O Beautiful One who wears the crescent moon as a jewel upon Your head, Glory to You!
(Pāchanam mruta-janangale)
Purifying and transforming mortals (saving them from the cycle of birth and death)
(Paripālikkum para-daivamē jaya)
O Supreme Deity who protects and sustains all, Glory to You!
(Pāzhiyūr vilasum vibhō jaya)
O All-pervading Lord who shines gloriously in Pāzhiyūr, Glory to You!
(Pārvatī sukrutam vāanēn jaya)
O Lord who is the blessed fortune and spritual merit (sukritam)of Pārvatī, Glory to You!
