Meaning

Summary : This Sopanam hymn praises Goddess Bhadrakali of the Mundappuzha temple as the compassionate protector and destroyer of all evil times. It meditates on Her dual nature, contrasting Her wrathful form that shakes the universe to destroy the demon Darika with Her striking, captivating beauty. The verses describe Her holding sacred weapons, wearing a garland of bones, and performing a fierce, rhythmic dance. The singer repeatedly bows to Her tender feet, whose jingling anklets are so divine that even Time itself pauses to listen. Finally, the hymn serves as a humble prayer, asking the omnipresent Mother to accept these praises and bless Her devotees with protection and well-being.
Pallavi : O Goddess Kali, protector of the lineage, who is adorned with a garland of skulls! You are the primal cause of existence, full of compassion, the consort of Shiva, and the giver of fearlessness.
Anupallavi : O Mother Ambika, who wards off all evil planetary effects and bad times, please protect me. Salutations to You, Bhadrakali, who is dearly loved by Lord Shiva (the destroyer of Time/Death himself).
Charanam 1 : I bow to Your form with dark, jet-black beautiful curly locks, piercing fierce eyes, and lips dripping with the blood of demons. Your terrifying, booming laughter shakes all the eight directions; salutations to You, Mother, in Your fierce and wrathful manifestation.
Charanam 2 : Holding the sword, trident, skull-cup, conch, discus, and mace, You perform a vigorous, rhythmic dance wearing a garland of bones across Your chest. I forever bow to this divine form of Yours, which was assumed specifically for the destruction of the demon Darika.
Charanam 3 : I bow to Your physical form, which is strikingly beautiful and mesmerizing to the eyes. Beloved of Shiva, I bow to Your tender, petal-like feet, and I worship the rhythmic sound of Your anklets, a divine vibration that even Time itself stands still to listen to.
Charanam 4 : Salutations to my Bhadrakali who resides at Mundappuzha temple, the giver of all auspiciousness who dwells across the three worlds. Please accept this humble, devotional hymn sung by your servants standing before You, and bless us with eternal well-being and protection.
