Summary : This hymn is dedicated toGodess Bhadrakali, the residing deity of the Moozhikkal Bhagavathi Temple. The hymn glorifies the Goddess in Her fierce yet protective form, describing Her dark rain-cloud radiance, Her triumph over wicked demons like Darika and Mahishasura, and Her power to destroy terrible epidemics and worldly miseries. Despite Her fearsome appearance, She is praised as an approachable, pure-faced ocean of mercy who swiftly blesses Her devotees, removes their deep sorrows, and serves as their ultimate, irreplaceable protector.
Shlokam : Om. I bow to the supreme Goddess Kali, who shines with the dark radiance of rain clouds and possesses three eyes. She stands majestically upon the neck of a ghoul (Vetala). In Her hands, She wields a sword, a shield, a skull, and holds the severed head of the demon Darika. Surrounded by spirits, ghosts, fiends, and the divine mother-goddesses (Matrikas), She is adorned with a glowing garland of severed heads. I praise that Supreme Goddess, the destroyer of wicked forces and terrible epidemics like smallpox (masoorika).
Pallavi : Oh vast ocean of mercy who resides and reigns at Moozhikkal! You are our eternal, ultimate refuge. I bow before You with folded hands.
Anupallavi : Oh ocean of divine bliss, I praise Your form. Oh pure, compassionate maiden and ocean of mercy! Oh Mother, may Your immense grace swiftly flow like a beautiful lotus into the heart of this humble servant.
Charanam-1 : Oh Kalyani, who loves the deep dark rain clouds and is highly revered by sweet-tongued, noble people! You are the fierce Kali who effortlessly, like a sport, vanquished countless demons (danavas). Oh Mother Ambika, devotees worship You with absolute clarity, offering fragrant flowers in boundless devotion.
Charanam-2 : Oh Mahisha Mardini (slayer of the buffalo demon Mahishasura), bestower of auspiciousness (Mangalye)! For all those who praise Your glory across the earth, You extinguish the countless miseries and burning sorrows of this worldly life. You are the pure-faced Goddess who resides on this earth, moving gracefully with an exquisite and majestic presence.
Charanam-3 : No one can fully articulate or describe Your true greatness; even the mighty king of serpents (Adisesha) would find it a monumental task. Apart from You, we have no other supreme deity to look up to for refuge. Oh daughter of Shiva (Rudra Sutha), sister of Vishnu (Hari than sahodari), Bhadrakali, I offer my salutations to You.
