Summary : This devotional Sopana hymn is a heartfelt prayer of total surrender and spiritual seeking directed toward Lord Ayyappa. The lyricist portrays the struggles of human existence as an unpredictable, sorrowful ocean and calls upon the deity as the ultimate protector and guide. By praising His divine attributes—His forest dwelling, His sacred lineage, and His pure form—the hymn serves as both a plea for inner cleansing from worldly desires and a devout request for the strength to undertake the sacred Sabarimala pilgrimage to achieve spiritual liberation at His feet.
Pallavi : The devotee implores, "Oh Lord, please protect and bless me. You who reside deep within the sacred forests, the one adorned with the golden bell around your neck (Manikandan)." It sets the core theme of absolute surrender to Lord Ayyappa.
Anupallavi : It expresses human vulnerability, asking the Lord for liberation: "I am floating and struggling endlessly in this deep ocean of worldly miseries, sorrows, and grief (Kadanakkadal). Please hold my hand and pull me safely to the shore, Oh Lord Shaasta."
Charanam - 1 : This verse celebrates the divine lineage and nature of the deity: "Oh Resident of the holy Pampa river banks, the beloved son of Mohini (and Shiva). You are the absolute embodiment of the destruction of all sins. You ride the fierce wild tiger and dwell in eternal bliss (Nithyananda). Kindly grant us the strength and blessings to ascend the mighty sacred hills (Sabarimala)."
Charanam - 2 : A prayer for inner cleansing and moral guidance: "Oh Lord of beautiful and enchanting form, please shield our hearts daily and restrain our worldly desires, greed, and attachments (Kaamaarthikal). You wear the dark blue attire (Neelaambara) and possess a pure, immaculate form. Beside you, we have no other refuge or protector in this life."
Charanam - 3 : The ultimate declaration of surrender and seeking liberation: "Oh Lord of the Sabari hills, the eternal, timeless deity. I seek total refuge in you, Lord Ayyappa (Sharanam Swami Ayyappa). Out of your boundless compassion, please guide me and show me the true spiritual path to reach your divine, holy feet."
