Summary : This hymn recounts the mythological narrative behind the birth of Lord Ayyappan. It begins by recalling the cosmic crisis when a powerful Asura (Mahishasura/Bhasmasura) threatened the universe. To defeat this threat, Lord Vishnu manifested as the enchanting Mohini. Captivated by this supreme form, Lord Shiva (referred to here as Maaraari, the enemy of the god of lust) embraced Mohini. The second stanza celebrates the fruit of this union: the birth of Hariharasutha (the son of Vishnu and Shiva), known as Lord Ayyappan or Bhoothanatha. The hymn concludes with the devotee offering deep obeisance to the deity, hailing Him as an incomparable master of archery (Villaali Veeran) and meditating upon His radiant, blue-complexioned divine form.
മായമോടസുരേശനേ (Māyamōda Surēśanē)
The lord of the Asuras (demons), who operated with dark illusions and deceit (maayam)...
കൊലചെയ്വാനായി മാധവന് (Kola cheyvānāyi Mādhavan)
...in order to vanquish and destroy him, Lord Vishnu (Maadhavan)...
മായാ.. മോഹിനീ വേഷം പൂണ്ടനാള് (Māyā Mohinī vēsham pūnda nāl)
...assumed the enchanting, illusory form of the divine maiden Mohini.
മരാരികുളത്തീശനേ ജയ | (Marārikulatthīśanē jaya)
Glory to the Supreme Lord who reigns at Mararikulam (Lord Shiva, the enemy of Kamadeva)!
അന്നുണ്ടായൊരു ഭൂതനാഥനാം (Annudāyoru Bhūthanāthanām)
From that divine union arose the Lord of the cosmic elements and celestial attendants (Bhoothanaathan)...
ഹരിഹരസുതന് അയ്യന് അയ്യപ്പന് (Annudāyoru Bhūthanāthanām)
...the son of Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Hara), Lord Ayyan Ayyappan.
വില്ലാളികളില് വീരനായൊരു നിലവയ്യനെ (Annudāyoru Bhūthanāthanām)
To that Blue-hued Lord (Nilavayyan) who stands supreme as the greatest warrior among all archers (villaalikalil veeran)...
ഇതാ ഞാന് വണങ്ങിടുന്നേന് ജയ (Annudāyoru Bhūthanāthanām)
...I bow down in absolute surrender. Glory to You!
