Summary : This majestic hymn uses exquisite alliteration and rhythmic cadences to praise the dual nature of Lord Krishna—as both the enchanting divine musician and the supreme destroyer of evil. The first part highlights the mesmerizing power of His flute, which is so profound that it captivates and melts even the highly detached, meditative minds of great sages. It simultaneously extols His valor as the savior of the universe who wiped out tyrannical forces like Mura and Narakasura. The second part visualizes Him in His eternal playground along the pristine banks of the Yamuna River, dancing with jingling anklets. It concludes as a deep, heartfelt prayer of complete surrender, where the devotee begs Purushottama (the Ultimate Soul) for continuous lifelong protection while striving to dissolve their own ego completely into His divine presence.
മുരളീരവ തരളീകൃത (Muralīrava taraḷīkr̥ta)
Whose divine flute music (muralee-rava) melts and deeply stirs (tharaleekritha)...
മുനി മാനസ മമലം (Muni mānasa mamalam)
...the pure, blemishless (amalam) minds of the silent sages and saints (muni-maanasa).
മുര ദാനവ നരകാസുര (Mura dānava Narakāsura)
O Destroyer of the demons Mura and Narakasura
കുല നാശന മമലം (Kula nāśana mamalam)
...You who eradicated their entire wicked lineage and influence
ചിരമംബര തടിനീകൃത (Chiramambara taṭinīkr̥ta)
Who has for a long time (chiram) made the banks of the river that mirrors the sky (referring to the sacred Yamuna river, ambara thadinee)...
നിലയം ചിലവലയം (Nilayam chila valayam)
...His divine abode (nilayam) and the playground for His anklet-tinkling dances (chila-valayam).
പുരുഷോത്തമ അനിശം (Purushōttama aniśam)
Oh Purushottama (the Supreme Being), at all times
പരിപാലയേ സതത വിലയം (PariPālayē satata vilayam)
...protect me as I constantly merge (sathatha vilayam) my mind in absolute surrender unto You.
