Summary : This devotional hymn is a complete head-to-toe (Kesadipadam) adoration and visualization of Lord Shiva (Parameshwara). The verses describe His matted hair carrying the crescent moon and the river Ganga, the third eye that incinerated Kamadeva, His serpent earrings, and His blue throat bearing the Kalakoota poison. It further contemplates the sacred weapons in His hands, the tiger pelt around His waist, and the holy ankles embraced by the young sage Markandeya for protection against Yama. The song culminates in a total surrender before the cosmic dancing feet and the all-encompassing form of Mahadeva. No specific earthly temple is mentioned in the verses of the hymn.
Charanam-1 : I bow before Your sacred matted hair adorned with the cool crescent moon; I bow before the holy waters of the sacred river Ganga dwelling therein; and I bow before Your holy forehead that holds the blazing, golden third eye which ignited to reduce the god of desire (Kamadeva) to ashes.
Charanam-2 : I bow before Your curved eyebrows that dispel arrogance and darkness for the righteous governance and sustenance of all worldly beings; O ocean of mercy, I bow before Your divine eyes that bestow soothing joy and auspicious boons upon those seeking refuge in You.
Charanam-3 : I bow before Your sacred nose that rivals the beauty of a delicate sesame flower (sesame blossom); I fold my hands in adoration before Your lips that surpass the crimson luster of corals; I bow before Your divinely radiant fragrance, and I venerate Your holy cheeks that grant fearlessness.
Charanam-4 : I bow before Your sacred face graced with ears adorned with the radiant brilliance of twin serpents serving as earrings; and I revere Your beautifully shaped neck, marked with the deep indigo-blue hue from holding the deadly Kalakoota poison.
Charanam-5 : I bow before Your broad chest adorned with clusters of skull-garlands (Mundamala) that sway with lively grace; and I fold my hands today before Your radiant hands gracefully wielding the trident, the skull-bowl, the battle-axe, and holding the golden deer.
Charanam-6 : I bow before Your sacred torso smeared with ash from the cremation ground; I fold my hands before Your holy abdomen containing the sublime navel; and I worship the exquisite grace of Your waist wrapped majestically in royal tiger hide.
Charanam-7 : I bow before Your two splendid, charming thighs where the daughter of the snowy mountain (Parvati) and Her divine children rest; and I fold my hands before the sacred ankles that the frightened sage-boy Markandeya embraced in deep grief and devotion on the fateful day when the lord of death (Yama) approached.
Charanam-8 : I bow today before Your twin lotus feet adorned with melodious ankle bells that shine with the splendor of the cosmic dance (Tandava); I fold my hands before the radiant nails gleaming upon Your lotus feet, and I bow in total surrender before Your complete divine form, O Parameshwara!
