Summary : This classical devotional hymn is an adoration addressed to Lord Padmanabha / Lord Vishnu (Krishna), venerating Him as the supreme deity reclining upon the divine serpent Ananta (Pannagashayana). Extolling His role as the guardian and protector of the royal kingdom of Vanchi (Travancore, directly referencing the tutelary deity of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram), the verses recall His divine exploits as the son of Devaki, the savior of the elephant Gajendra, the companion of the Pandavas, the tamer of the serpent Kaliya, and the slayer of demons like Keshi. The song is an ardent plea for deliverance from sins, mental distress, and earthly sorrows, seeking perpetual refuge under the graceful gaze of the lotus-eyed Lord.
Pallavi : O Lord reclining upon the celestial serpent Ananta, protect me, please protect me! O Lord Hari who rests upon the cosmic serpent, deliver me!
Anupallavi : O sleeper on the serpent couch, redeemer and liberator from sins, destroyer of inner sorrow and dejection, slayer of the demon Keshi; protect me!
Charanam-1 : O darling son of Devaki, slayer of demons, of immaculate and sanctifying life deeds, preserver and ruler of all the worlds! You who ride upon the king of birds (Garuda), protector of those who seek refuge, delighter of the Pandavas, and vanquisher of deceptive demonic forces.
Charanam-2 : O punisher of fierce thieves, beloved Lord of the Gopikas, possessing a dark complexion like water-laden rainclouds, guardian and savior of Gajendra the elephant; lotus-eyed destroyer of formidable adversaries, beloved son who relieves the heavy burdens of the earth, sovereign protector of the kings of Vanchi (the Travancore royal realm), and fulfiller of all cherished wishes.
Charanam-3 : O lotus-eyed Lord, master who subdued and danced upon the serpent Kaliya, possessing the majestic, graceful stride of a noble tusker, endowed with an enchanting and lovely countenance; O Lord Hari who reclines on the serpent, protect me!
