Summary : This ritualistic devotional hymn is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, evoking Her terrifying yet deeply maternal divine nature. It portrays the Goddess dancing in divine frenzy amidst the beat of para drums and blazing torches, wearing skulls and severed limbs, and stepping upon Lord Shiva's chest to curb Her uncontainable fury. The hymn recounts Her legendary victory over the demon Darika while emphasizing Her protective role as the guardian deity of the clan (kula-paradevatha) who turns into an ocean of compassion for surrendered devotees. No specific earthly temple name is mentioned in the verses, as it embodies the traditional Kerala temple ritual idiom common to Padayani, Mudiyettu, and Theyyam devotional lore.
Pallavi : Beating the rhythmic para drum, singing the devotional verse, whirling, and scanning all directions with fierce reddened eyes, Goddess Kali arrives dancing in divine trance.
Anupallavi : Rising with five ignited wicks and sparks cascading around Her blazing form, Goddess Kali shines resplendently before the leaping flames of sacred torches (theevetti).
Charanam-1 : Girt in garments strung with hands and adorned with a garland of severed skulls, Kali manifests fully displaying sacred esoteric gestures (mudras); transfer Your relentless fury and the heavy imprint of Your unyielding feet onto the Lord's chest and dance on in ecstatic trance, O Kali!
Charanam-2 : With eighteen hands that uphold truth, perform righteous protection, and reveal mystical mudras, set Your cosmic steps and dance, O Kali; transfer Your deep, unquenchable burden of wrath upon the Lord's sacred chest and dance in sublime trance, O Kali!
Charanam-3 : Holding aloft the severed head of the slain demon Darika alongside the joyous warrior Nanduka, dance on, O Kali; O dark-complexioned Mother, sweet bower of maternal tenderness for Your constant devotees, dance Your furious cosmic dance!
Charanam-4 : Whirling in divine possession and pervading all creation as terror itself unto fear, the fierce Goddess fills all eight cosmic directions; yet, as an ocean of motherly affection and absolute sanctuary for those seeking refuge, dwell forever guarding and protecting our clan (kulam), O Kali!
