Summary : This devotional hymn is an earnest supplication dedicated to Lord Shiva (invoked as Sri Neelakantha, Purahara, and Parashankara) presiding over the sacred Pazhoor Perumthrikkovil Temple (Pazhoor) in Piravom, Kerala. Extolling the Lord adorned with serpents, ashes, bones, and the celestial Ganga in His red matted locks, the hymn recalls His past grace in healing Banasura and notes how Adisesha yearns to recite His endless glories. The composition forms an ardent plea for immediate divine compassion to alleviate growing inner torment and to protect the devotee with His piercing arrow when Yama (the god of death) arrives at life's final hour.
Pallavi : Protect me, O ocean of mercy, protect me, O Sri Neelakantha who resides and presides at Pazhoor!
Anupallavi : Deep anguish and torment constantly grow within my heart; O Purahara (destroyer of Tripura), let there not be even half a moment's delay or hindrance in showering Your compassionate grace upon this humble servant!
Charanam-1 : Your divine grace is ever needed, O deer-eyed Lord! Just as You restored and healed the wounded body of devotee Banasura in ancient times when he was served and accompanied by the veena-playing sage, let that vision appear within my mind; do not delay for a moment in extending Your protective hand and granting this boon!
Charanam-2 : O Lord who lovingly adorns the serpents, the sacred river Ganga upon Your red matted locks, the holy ash, and the bone ornaments! In deep devotion, assemblies of great and venerable sages bow down and abide perpetually at Your lotus feet; I bow before You, O supreme Shankara, O Lord Shiva!
Charanam-3 : When one contemplates, the king of serpents (Adisesha) waits with yearning eagerness everywhere just to recount Your boundless glory; when Yama, the son of the Sun god (Marthandatmajan), approaches to inflict mortal distress and agony, remember the spiritual virtue of this hymn of praise, and let Your sharp arrow strike and ward him off!
