Summary : This classical devotional hymn is dedicated to Goddess Parvati (revered as Parvatha Nandini, Parameshwari, and Katyayani), celebrating Her sacred presence at the ancient Cheranalloor Sree Bhagavathy / Katyayani Temple in Ernakulam, Kerala. The verses offer an elaborate description of the Goddess adorned with an emerald crown, moon-like radiance, and four hands gracefully holding a parrot, sheaves of paddy, and a conch. Recounting Her vanquishing of demonic forces to establish cosmic peace, the composition presents Her as the divine sister of Krishna and the eternal consort of Lord Shiva. The hymn culminates in an earnest prayer of total surrender (sharanagati), beseeching the Mother to cast Her compassionate glance during the soul's final journey and dwell eternally as the auspicious guiding light of Cheranalloor.
Pallavi : Glory to the daughter of the mountain (Parvati), glory to Parameshwari! Glory to the beloved consort of Lord Shiva (Hara), who resides upon the sacred mountains!
Anupallavi : I meditate upon the divine sister of the flute-bearing Lord Krishna (Muralidhara), who lifted Mount Govardhana; I bow to You, the eternal Mother of all animate and inanimate creation.
Charanam-1 : Glory to You who wear a radiant crown adorned with gleaming emeralds! O charming maiden shining like the gentle crescent moon, endowed with twin lotus-like eyes, a nose delicate as a sesame blossom, and a smiling face luminous as the full autumn moon!
Charanam-2 : Adorned with auspicious garlands of fresh flower petals and splendid golden bangles and necklaces; You gracefully hold a parrot, sheaves of paddy, and the sacred conch in Your tender, sprout-like hands.
Charanam-3 : Bestower of boons upon surrendered devotees, whose holy feet are worshipped by Lord Vishnu (the slayer of Mura), Lord Brahma, and assemblies of venerable sages; manifesting as the very form of compassion in the enchanting guise of Goddess Katyayani, You dwell here in divine glory.
Charanam-4 : O radiant daughter of the mountain, who pitilessly destroyed the hordes of demons (rajanicharas) to restore peace to the cosmos; I bow and surrender before Your sacred lotus feet.
Charanam-5 : Adorned in beautiful garments, embodying auspiciousness, possessing the slow, majestic gait of a noble tusker; beholding Your dense kohl-dark tresses, Your twin lotus feet, and Your enchanting form, I fold my hands in adoration.
Charanam-6 : O primal cause of creation, granter of cherished desires, boundless ocean of the nectar of mercy, O Mother! When the emissaries of Yama arrive at life's final moment, please cast Your compassionate glance from Your anxious, tender eyes.
Charanam-7 : O divine maiden who abides worshipping the conqueror of Kamadeva (Lord Shiva / Marari) as Her Lord; O Mahamaya, dwell forever as the auspicious, glowing lamp (mangala deepam) of sacred Cheranalloor!
