Summary : This song is the renowned 1st Ashtapadi from the 12th-century lyrical classic Gita Govinda, dedicated to Lord Krishna (Hari / Govinda / Jagannatha). This immortal liturgical composition is an invocatory adoration dedicated to Lord Krishna (Keshava / Hari / Jagadeesha), celebrated as the supreme primordial Divine Being who manifests in ten cosmic incarnations (Dashavatara) to protect dharma, preserve the Vedas, and redeem creation. Opening with the canonical mood-setting shlokam depicting Radha and Madhava along the dark, cloudy banks of the river Yamuna, the hymn systematically extols the divine exploits of Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Balarama, Buddha, and Kalki. Concluding with an auspicious phalasthuti composed by Jayadeva, it extols the chanting of these divine forms as the ultimate source of spiritual bliss, peace, and deliverance across mortal existence.
Shlokam : The sky is dense and overcast with dark rain clouds; the forest grounds are darkened by the thick foliage of Tamala trees. Night is falling, and this child is fearful; therefore, O Radha, you alone must escort Him safely home! Directed thus by Nanda, the secret loving sports of Radha and Madhava (Krishna), wandering from bower to bower and tree to tree along the banks of the sacred river Yamuna, reign supreme in glory!
Charanam-1 : In the turbulent waters of the cosmic deluge, O Lord Hari, holding the sacred Vedas and acting without distress like a divine boat of salvation, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of the divine Fish (Matsya)!
Charanam-2 : Upon Your exceedingly vast and mighty back, O Lord Hari, rests the immense burden of the earth, bearing the cosmic scars and marks of carrying the globe, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of the divine Tortoise (Kurma)!
Charanam-3 : Resting upon the tip of Your sacred tusk, O Lord Hari, rests Mother Earth, merged and nestled like the dark, beautiful spot upon the radiant face of the moon, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of the divine Boar (Varaha)!
Charanam-4 : Upon Your supreme lotus hands, O Lord Hari, Your astonishing and sharp claws tore apart the bee-like body of the mighty demon Hiranyakashipu, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the half-man, half-lion form (Narasimha)!
Charanam-5 : Deceiving King Bali with Your three strides, O Lord Hari, You wondrous dwarf Brahmin whose foot-nail waters (the holy river Ganga) sanctify and purify all living beings, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of Vamana!
Charanam-6 : In the ocean of Kshatriya blood, O Lord Hari, You wash and cleanse the world of accumulated sins, bathing away the fiery torment and affliction of worldly existence, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of the lord of the Bhrigus (Parashurama)!
Charanam-7 : Scattering in the directions upon the battlefield, O Lord Hari, You offered the delightful and splendid sacrifice of the ten-headed demon king Ravana’s heads to the divine guardians of the directions, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of the sovereign of the Raghu dynasty (Rama)!
Charanam-8 : You wear upon Your fair and immaculate body, O Lord Hari, garments radiant like dark rain clouds, carrying the sacred deep dark beauty of the river Yamuna fleeing in dread from the strike of Your plow, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of the wielder of the plow (Balarama)!
Charanam-9 : Decrying and condemning the sacrificial rites of the Vedas, O Lord Hari, with a heart overflowing with tenderness and compassion upon witnessing the slaughter of innocent animals, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of the enlightened Buddha!
Charanam-10 : For the destruction and vanquishing of the wicked hordes, O Lord Hari, You brandish a flashing curved sword terrifying and blazing like a fiery comet, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed the form of Kalki!
Charanam-11 : Composed by Sri Jayadeva, O Lord Hari, this delightful, noble, and auspicious hymn brings supreme welfare, joy, and the very essence of spiritual life; hear it with devotion, glory to the Lord of the universe, O Keshava who assumed these ten divine incarnations (Dashavatara)!
