Summary : This devotional hymn is an earnest expression of spiritual longing (viraha bhakti) and total surrender dedicated to Lord Krishna (invoked as Vasudeva, Govinda, and Balagopala). The devotee contemplates the transience of earthly life along the river Nila, praying that if another rebirth is destined, it should only be as a tender blade of grass or a silent stone in the sacred land of Vrindavan (Vrindavana thalir). That holy soil is celebrated as the playground where Krishna performed his enchanting Raas Leela with Radha to the music of his flute, leaving his divine footprints along the banks of the Yamuna amidst blooming flowers and humming honeybees. The song captures the humble desire to receive the perpetual touch of Krishna's lotus feet.
Shlokam : Salutations again and again unto Lord Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, the darling boy of Devaki, the beloved son of Nandagopa, Lord Govinda!
Pallavi : Could I not be born as a blade of grass, or else could I not be born as a stone?
Anupallavi : Is there yet another birth awaiting me in this cycle? If indeed there is another birth, could I not be born as a tender blade of grass in holy Vrindavan, or else as a stone?
Charanam-1 : In that resplendent Vrindavan adorned with blooming springtime flowers, radiating vernal beauty, where Lord Hari playfully enacted the enchanting Raas Leela and charmed Radha with the sweet melodies of His flute—could I not be born there as a tender sprout of grass, or else as a stone?
Charanam-2 : In that enchanting Vrindavan, adorned and beautified by the ripples of the Kalindi (Yamuna) river, consecrated with the sacred footprints of young Balagopala, and echoing with the humming of honeybees among lotus pollen—could I not be born there as a tender blade of grass, or else as a stone?
Charanam-3 : When this mortal lifetime—a fleeting playful existence rooted beside the long waters of the river Nila—departs one day, will this soul take another birth, or return once more into this earthly realm? If it is destined to return, could I not be born as a tender blade of grass in that Vrindavan, or else as a stone? O Krishna! O Krishna!
