Meaning
Summary :       This devotional hymn is an elaborate contemplation of the Ardhanarishwara form, celebrating the composite, unified manifestation of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (Shankara and Shankari) in a single body. Verse by verse, the composition contrasts the masculine, ascetic attributes of the right half (valatthe bhaagam) with the feminine, grace-filled adornments of the left half (idatthe bhaagam). The song balances imagery such as matted locks and braided tresses, ashes and fragrant sandal paste, the fierce Tandava and graceful Lasya, venomous serpent anklets and chiming golden bells, and the trident alongside the noose and goad. It concludes with an earnest prayer yearning to perceive this unified half-and-half divine presence constantly within one's spiritual vision.

Charanam-1 : On the right half, the hair is bound into ascetic matted dreadlocks; on the left half, dark, neatly styled tresses are arranged and tucked with grace.

Charanam-2 : On the right half, the cool crescent moon rests upon the crest; on the left half, rows of fragrant, fresh blossoms are tucked into the hair.

Charanam-3 : On the right half, the fierce tiger skin is wrapped as attire; on the left half, fine, elegant flower-woven silks drape gracefully.

Charanam-4 : On the right half blazes the fiery third eye of cosmic destruction; on the left half glistens the delicate, auspicious forehead mark (tilak).

Charanam-5 : The right half is smeared with holy sacred ash (bhasma); the left half is anointed with cool, fragrant sandalwood paste (kalabham).

Charanam-6 : The right half embodies the vigorous cosmic dance of Tandava; the left half radiates the charming, delicate elegance of Lasya.

Charanam-7 : On the right half stand the celestial attendants and phantom hosts (Bhoothaganas); on the left half resides the beloved son, Lord Ganesha.

Charanam-8 : On the right half hangs a garland strung of severed skulls; on the left half rest necklaces of fresh, sparkling gems and pearls.

Charanam-9 : On the right half is wound a writhing serpent anklet; on the left half chimes a delicate golden anklet.

Charanam-10 : The right half presents an awe-inspiring, wondrous cosmic manifestation; the left half radiates as the very embodiment of auspicious prosperity (Aishwarya).

Charanam-11 : The right half is the manifestation of Lord Shankara; the left half abides gracefully as Goddess Shankari.

Charanam-12 : The right half radiates with deep bluish-dark luster; the left half gleams with the auspicious crimson radiance of sacred kumkum.

Charanam-13 : The right half holds the cosmic trident (Trishula) and the skull-bowl (Kapala); the left half gracefully carries the sacred noose (Pasha) and goad (Ankusha).

Charanam-14 : O Shiva, Shiva, Lord Shiva, may this marvelous half-and-half composite divine form remain manifest and vividly perceived across Your entire sacred body at all times!
