Summary : This traditional devotional hymn is dedicated to Lord Shiva in His majestic, cosmic dance manifestation as Nataraja. The verses paint an elaborate iconographic portrait of the Lord, depicting His crimson matted locks bearing the crescent moon and River Ganga, His body smeared with sacred ashes, and His hands holding the damaru, axe, and young deer. It celebrates His Ananda Tandava—raising the left foot while crushing the demon Apasmara beneath the right foot—radiating the nine classical navarasas to the percussive accompaniment of Nandi’s maddalam drum. The composition forms an earnest prayer of surrender, beseeching the compassionate Lord to manifest before the devotee and bestow protective boons.
Pallavi : Adorning the crescent moon upon His head, the Lord binds His radiant, crimson matted locks with consummate beauty and grace.
Anupallavi : He is the Supreme Divine Lord who captures and gently cradles the descending River Ganga amidst His swirling coils of matted hair.
Charanam-1 : Smearing His sacred divine body with the white ashes of the cremation grounds, filled with supreme bliss, He produces and unleashes the cosmic rhythm of tharikida thom upon the hand drum (damaru) held in His left hand.
Charanam-2 : Holding tenderly against His chest the young fawn born to a leaping doe, and bearing the sacred battle-axe (mazhu) along with the all-seeing third eye centered upon His forehead, may I soon behold this magnificent divine form!
Charanam-3 : Adorned with spreading hooded serpents and wrapped in elephant and tiger hides as His sacred garments, please manifest clearly before this humble servant without delay, and shower loving boons with abundant compassion.
Charanam-4 : Lifting His sacred left foot gracefully aloft while pressing His right foot firmly onto the earth, He crushes the demon of ignorance and delusion (Apasmara) beneath His feet while casting a tranquil, compassionate glance.
Charanam-5 : Radiating all nine aesthetic sentiments of classical dance (Navarasas) across every limb and gesture, while His devoted mount Nandi ecstatically sounds and plays the rhythmic maddalam drum to awaken the cosmic rhythm.
