Meaning
Summary :       This devotional composition is dedicated to Lord Shiva (worshipped as Samba Shiva, Shankara, and Shambho) presiding over the Thiruvumplavu (Thiruvumplavil Sree Mahadeva) Temple. The hymn extols the Lord's supreme cosmic form adorned with the holy river Ganga, the radiant crescent moon, serpent ornaments, a garland of skulls, and the tiger skin as the destroyer of evil and the granter of liberation. It celebrates His cosmic Tandava dance harmonized with Vedic chants that delight the celestial gods, while His four hands display the axe, deer, and the gestures of blessing and fearlessness. The devotee places absolute faith and surrender at the lotus feet of the Lord of Thiruvumplavu, praying for deliverance from worldly sorrow and the bestowal of divine grace.

Pallavi: O Samba Shiva of Thiruvumplavu, the all-pervading Shankara and Shambho, O vast ocean of compassion steadfast like the Sahya mountain, I bow down in humble reverence before Your holy presence.

Anupallavi: Half of Your divine form is delightfully shared on the right side, while on the left stands the venerable deity with folded hands in joyful, respectful adoration.

Charanam-1: To remove worldly impurities, bring an end to all hardships and miseries, and grant supreme liberation (moksha), the holy river Ganga flows within Your matted hair; meanwhile, the cool crescent moon showers thrilling delight and sweet nectar like pure, radiant moonlight.

Charanam-2: To reduce all evil to ashes and cause virtues and goodness to blossom abundantly everywhere, You possess three divine eyes; chanting the sacred Vedas, Your cosmic dance (Tandava), accompanied by divine melody, captivates even the celestial realm of the gods.

Charanam-3: As the garland of skulls on Your broad chest echoes with songs of praise, Your serpent adornments nod their heads in joy; draped in a majestic tiger skin around the waist and bearing sacred matted hair, Your divine form wordlessly reveals the ultimate cosmic truth.

Charanam-4: Bearing the battle-axe (mazhu) and the deer, and extending the gestures of boons (varada) and fearlessness (abhaya) in Your sacred hands, You openly reveal Your supreme capability to do anything; to perceive my worldly grief and shower a rain of auspicious blessings, I have no refuge other than You, O Lord Shambho residing in Thiruvumplavu.
